Koshi Hybrid

Koshi Hybrid is a culmination of two projects into one — intersecting the functional aspects of layered textiles and lighting installations. The term Koshi refers to the curvature of a piece of Japanese pottery. Set in Seattle’s International District, this hybrid space was designed to share the hand-crafted elements of artists both near and far with the local community. It also serves as a neighborhood hub, merging good food and coffee, local retail, and community events like music and pop-up art galleries.

To accommodate flexibility and multiple uses of the space, our focus was on developing integral wall and ceiling systems featuring expansive custom lighting installations. Depending on the situation, the main wall easily transforms from a series of built-in shelving and bookcases into small private cubbies, intimate individual retail alcoves, functional dividers, and even a private conference room. Discreetly integrated lighting throughout the space is continuously tuned to the environment in real time enhancing the current atmosphere.
